What are companies looking for in an IT CV

Companies that are hiring for IT positions are typically looking for candidates with a combination of technical skills, experience, and soft skills. Your CV is the 1st thing they see, and you need to showcase your skills as much as possible.

Having a short CV without duties and responsibilities or skills list is not going to WOW a Hiring Manager, Recruiter or HR whoโ€™s looking at your CV. Put yourself in their shoes and see if you will hire yourself when looking at your CV.

Here are some of the things that companies are often looking for in an IT CV:

  1. Technical skills: Companies will be looking for a strong technical background in IT. This may include specific programming languages, database management skills, cloud computing expertise, cybersecurity skills, or other technical skills relevant to the position.
  2. Relevant experience: Companies want to see that you have relevant experience in IT, whether that’s through work experience, internships, or personal projects. Your CV should highlight your relevant work experience and demonstrate how you have applied your technical skills in real-world situations by adding duties and responsibilities.
  3. Certifications: IT certifications can demonstrate your expertise in a specific area of IT, and many companies look for candidates with relevant certifications. If you have any relevant certifications, be sure to list them on your CV.
  4. Soft skills: IT professionals are often required to work in teams, collaborate with others, and communicate effectively. Employers will be looking for candidates with strong communication skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well with others.
  5. Continuous learning: The IT industry is constantly evolving, and companies want to hire IT professionals who are committed to staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends. Highlight any relevant courses, certifications, or self-learning initiatives that you have undertaken in your CV, whether you think it is relevant or not. I promise you it is!
  6. Attention to detail: IT work often requires a high degree of precision and accuracy. Employers will be looking for candidates who can demonstrate attention to detail in their work and in their CV.
  7. Accomplishments: Companies want to see what you have achieved in your previous roles. Be sure to highlight any notable accomplishments, such as projects you have worked on, improvements you have made to systems, or awards you have received.

Overall, a strong IT CV should showcase your technical skills, relevant experience, soft skills, and continuous learning mindset. It should also demonstrate your ability to work well in a team and your commitment to delivering results.
