We, as recruiters with experience, have observed that imposter syndrome is a frequent issue for many skilled applicants in their hunt for jobs. It’s an ordinary problem which might prevent people from going after desired positions and promoting themselves well.

Imposter syndrome is this constant sense that you are not skilled or deserving of the accomplishments you have earned. Even those who are very successful might feel like they’re just pretending, doubting their own abilities and worrying about being exposed as a fake.

When job searching, imposter syndrome can manifest in several ways:

🚨Undervaluing your skills and experience

🚨Avoiding applying for roles you’re qualified for

🚨Struggling to articulate your strengths in interviews

🚨Feeling like you “got lucky” with any job offers

This questioning of oneself can seriously damage your trust in yourself and stop you from giving your all.

Here’s some advice for job seekers dealing with imposter syndrome:

💡  𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
Understand that even the most accomplished individuals have experienced this sensation of being an imposter in their own lives. You are not the only one!

💡  𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.
Create a record of your abilities, successes, and compliments that you have received. Use this as a reference when feeling uncertain.

💡  𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰.
When self-doubt starts to grow, fight against those negative thoughts with real facts about what you are capable of doing.

💡  𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Be gentle with yourself and don’t judge too harshly. You’re learning, and that’s alright.

💡  𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽.
Speak with friends, mentors, or a professional career coach you trust to give you motivation and impartial suggestions.

Keep in mind, imposter syndrome doesn’t need to limit you. If you have the correct attitude and tactics, it will be possible for you to conquer this feeling and demonstrate your genuine worth to potential employers.
